New Museum of Architecture & Design

Helsingin Sydän

Helsingin Sydän, an open and inviting building that connects the city, harbour, and public square through its heart-shaped plan.

HELSINGIN SYDÄN (the ‘Heart of Helsinki’), our design proposal for the New Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki Finland is conceived as an open and inviting landmark, seamlessly connecting the city, the harbour, and its own public spaces. Its heart-shaped plan creates a fluid relationship between the museum’s interior and its surroundings, ensuring accessibility for both visitors and passersby.

A generous tribune facing the public square invites people to gather, rest, and engage with events, while the rooftop garden offers a tranquil urban retreat with panoramic views. The building’s circulation naturally guides visitors from the square to the exhibition spaces and up to the rooftop, creating a continuous spatial experience that blends culture and everyday life.

The materiality of the museum pays homage to Finland’s architectural heritage. Inspired by traditional wooden façades, the building features a warm and tactile wooden envelope, reinterpreted in a contemporary way. This fusion of history and modernity reflects the evolving narrative of Finnish design while maintaining a strong connection to its roots.

More than just a museum, this building is a dynamic cultural hub, embracing openness and interaction—an architectural symbol of Finland’s deep design tradition and forward-thinking vision.

The museum’s circulation seamlessly links all levels, creating a fluid experience between exhibitions and public life.
